Medium Voltage Covered Conductors (MVCC)

Medium Voltage Covered Conductors (MVCC) are advanced overhead power conductors designed to improve the safety, reliability, and performance of medium-voltage distribution networks. Unlike traditional bare conductors, MVCC features a stranded aluminium core with a robust insulating covering — typically UV-resistant, anti-tracking cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) — that protects the conductor against environmental and electrical hazards.

What Are MVCC?
MVCC are overhead conductors rated for medium voltage systems (typically 6.6 kV to 33 kV). The insulating covering shields the aluminium conductor from direct contact with trees, branches, animals, and other external factors that often cause faults in bare overhead systems.

The construction generally includes:

  • A stranded aluminium conductor (AAAC or ACSR)
  • A semiconducting shield layer
  • One or more layers of UV-stabilised, weather-resistant insulation.
  • An outer protective covering for long outdoor life and electrical resistance.

Key Features:

  1. Enhanced Safety:The insulated covering significantly reduces accidental contact risks for humans, wildlife, and equipment — particularly in urban, suburban, or congested areas.
  2. Fewer Power Outages:
MVCC dramatically reduces faults caused by vegetation, wind, storms, or animal interference, leading to more reliable power delivery.
  3. Lower Maintenance & Total Cost:
With less need for tree trimming, fewer fault repairs, and longer service life, MVCC cuts operational and maintenance expenses compared to bare conductors and even some underground alternatives.
  4. Better Environmental Performance:
The protective insulation resists corrosion, pollution, moisture, and UV exposure — ideal for coastal, industrial, or high-pollution regions.
  5. Compact & Flexible Installation:
MVCC allows reduced phase-to-phase clearances and can often be installed using existing poles and structures, making it suitable for constrained or densely populated environments.

Applications:

MVCC is widely used in:

  • Urban & residential power networks
  • Forested or wildlife areas
  • High-pollution and coastal regions
  • Road, railway, river, and utility crossings
  • Industrial power distribution and renewable energy sites
  • Voltage upgrade projects (e.g., 6.6 kV to 33 kV)

Why Choose MVCC?
MVCC combines the economy of overhead systems with the safety and reliability of insulated solutions. It is a cost-effective alternative to underground cables or aerial bunched cables (ABC), offering long service life, fewer outages, and improved operational safety — making it the preferred choice for modern medium-voltage distribution networks worldwide.
